The MacWindows.com website today is reporting that a recently released hotfix from Microsoft corrects a problem where Entourage users would receive the error message "Login failure: unknown user name or bad password."
According to Microsoft KB article 935973 this problem is caused by a codepage conversion for Japanese characters in Outlook Web Access (OWA). Email messages that contain Japanese characters in the subject line result in invalid file names.
Entourage users may see this problem if these conditions are met:
- Entourage is connecting to an OWA server
- The Exchange Server is version 2003
- A mail message (typically spam) is received with Japanese characters in the subject line
Hotfixes for servers are free but must be requested from Microsoft. Requests can be submitted online and links to hotfixes are generally available within eight business hours.

I too have had this login problem on occasion. Of course, at first I thought there was some type of network problem or some glitch with the exchange server running Window SB 2003. I am running Entourage 11.3.3 on a Macbook OS 10.4.10 with an intel core duo processor. But that all doesn't really matter. This happens with older machines and older versions.
The fix I have used successfully on three occasions now is to spoof entourage into looking for a different exchange server. I did this by going to Account Settings, Exchange, open an account and change the exchange server to a fictitious named server. If you have more than one account, then you must do this for all the accounts.
Quit Entourage. Then restart Entourage. Open each account again and change the exchange server back to the correct setting. Close Entourage. Restart and you should be good to go.

Hi Cliff!
That's an interesting solution, especially if it's been effective for you three times already. If you're only modifying the Exchange server and not the password that seems to rule out Keychain corruption. Do you know if your server already has this hotfix applied?
I'll file this in my arsenal of troubleshooting tricks under "Things that make you go hmm..."
Thanks! bill
