After installing iTunes 7.3.1 and Quicktime 7.2 Updater, at least some Rosetta Applications no longer work. Office for Mac 2004 runs under Rosetta. It's not just MS software, but all programs requiring CFM. The Dock Icons bounce once or twice and then nothing happens.
Solutions:
- Download the 10.4.10 combo update for your computer
- Reboot/login using Safe Mode
- Run Repair Permissions
- Install the OS Combo Updater
- Reboot
Note: Others have had to resort to an “Archive & Install” to get working again.

Darlene:QuickTime 7.2 breaking Rosetta CFM apps on Intel-based Macs: The definitive fixes; Crashes and other problems? remove components
Yesterday we reported that, representing one of the most serious issues ever associated with an incremental QuickTime update, QuickTime 7.2 appears to cause functionality problems -- particularly an inability to launch and crashes -- with Carbon CFM (Code Fragment Manager) applications on some Intel-based Macs. These include Microsoft Office, older versions of Photoshop (including CS2), and many, many others.
It's been a long night and morning, but here's what we now know about this issue: the problem was apparently caused by an error that occured during the "optimizing system performance" phase of QuickTime 7.2 installation, when the system's prebinding is being updated. [This is why we sternly warn that users not perform any processes and quit any open applications while a system update is taking place]. In many cases, the problem can be solved by simply updating prebinding again, which happens automatically when you re-apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 combo updater, as recommended yesterday.
In some cases, however, when users have installed the Java SE 6.0 Release 1 Developer Preview 6 -- available from Apple's Developer Connection Web site -- its presence causes the update prebinding process to crash. The solution is to remove Java SE 6.0 Release 1 Developer Preview 6, though it's not a simple process since Java SE 6.0 package installs more than 700 files in various locations on the startup drive and there is no uninstallation option.
The method for removal, identified by poster bigman13 on Apple's Discussion boards, adapted as follows:
Login as an administrator
Launch the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities)
Type cd /Library/Receipts/JavaSE6Release1.pkg/Contents and press return
Type lsbom -s -f Archive.bom > /tmp/files and press return (this will create a file in the /tmp directory named files that lists all of the contents of JavaSE6Release1.pkg)
Using your favorite text editor, open the file /tmp/files. Typing open /tmp/files then pressing return will open the file with TextEdit, by default. If you were using BBEdit, you could type BBedit open /tmp/files.
Replace all blank spaces, " " (type one space in the "find" field), with (type a single backslash with a single space after it in the replace field) and all entries of "./" with "rm /". If you opened the file in TextEdit, choose "Find" from the "Edit" menu, and make these replacements. Essentially you are generating a command list that will delete all the files installed by JavaSE6Release1.pkg.
Back in the Terminal, type sudo bash /tmp/files and press return
Next type rm -r /Library/receipts/JavaSE6Release1.pkg and press return.
Finally, update prebinding by typing sudo update_prebinding. When prompted for a password, enter your admin password, and press Return again. The process may take a few minutes, and you may see various messages flash by. The process is complete when the Terminal returns to a normal prompt. Do not perform any other operations while the update prebinding process is taking place.
If none of the fixes fix the issue best thing to do is a archive install of the OS, just do not do the latest Apple Update after this.

CGreer:Tried the above and will not work. I've also tried downloading the 11.3.6 update in a .dmg file to try and update office and that program suffers the same problem as other Office 2004 ones; begins to run then quits.

Oliver-Arne Hammerstein:Chris proposal works for me!
What I have done (in the order listed below)
1. starting my MacBook in save mode (Shift key, both on restart and after login button pressed)
2. repair permissions
3. perform update with Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (Intel)
4. reinstallment of Office 2004 (still dysfunctional)
5. Performing the steps listed above to remove Java SE 6 Preview b88 from my MacBook (including the prebinding)
6. Everything works fine (with the drawback that the Java SE 6 cannot be used anymore.

Frank Cohen:I can confirm that the manual removal of Java 1.6 Preview Edition and rebuild of the prebindings worked for me.
Also, I called Apple support today and they said lots of people seem to be encountering this problem.
I find it ironic that the problem is related to Java 6 considering my blog last week criticized Sun for not getting a real Java 6 on Mac OS X. http://www.pushtotest.com/thecohenblog/sun-blowing-its-java-opportunity
Thank you very much!

Heath:Had the same issue with a couple of bounces in the Dock (MS Word, Excel, PPT) after the iTunes/QuickTime update.
Used OnyX (v1.8.2) @ http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/onyx_tiger.html to execute a complete optimisation in the maintenance tab, restarted and voila, all back on deck.
Good luck!

How can Apple let such a bug unfixed?

K:Darlene thank you a million times!!!!
Uninstalling Java SE 6.0 Rlease 1 Developer Preview 6 from the Apple Developer's Connection worked like a charm! (Just thought I'd mention for anyone else that I used the "Replace All" option in TextEdit lol).
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Rick Strong:Thanks so much for the info, and Darlene, thanks for the bit about the Java SDK! Since I do a lot of work with Java this is a bit concerning, and very un-Apple-like.
With 10.4.10 and the Java SDK installed, I first noticed problems running Epson driver installers, which are built using an outdated (ca 2002) version of Installer Vise. (Why Epson would choose to build an installer for Intel-only drivers using a PPC version of Installer Vise I will never know.) They would start, leap about once or twice in the dock, then quit with no messages. From that and a few tests on other Installer Vise installers I thought that perhaps it was an installer problem. Epson could tell me nothing, except that they had never heard of such a problem. Mindvision (Installer Vise) also had very little to say. I even called Apple, but the person I spoke with had no additional information.
On a discussion group I was referred to MacFixit:
http://free-preflight.com/mac-os-x/mac-os-x-disk-maintenance.html
...where there is a mention of updating prebinding. I tried that, but got a few cryptic error messages, and no relief.
At approximately the same times last night I came across this discussion, and did a few experiments on Intel apps, forcing them to try to run with Rosetta...this resulted in the same bouncing icon followed by a silent exit. Sad as I was to do this, I removed the Jave SE 6.0 preview, updated prebinding once again, and was in business again. I did have to reinstall the latest Java SE 5.0 to restore references to Java in the system.
Again, thank you! for this topic, it really has helped me to restore my machine to a usable state. I will be much more circumspect about installing Apple's preview software int the future.
Best Regards,
Rick Strong

Shaun Bruno:I encountered alot of 'no such directory' errors while performing Darlene's outlined method, however upon completion of her steps the issue resolved itself. Very good because I've spent 4 hours trying to get my MS Word 2004 suite back online.
Thanks a bunch guys!
