Yes, Virginia, Entourage does sync with iPhone

Apple has posted a knowledgebase article on its website acknowledging that Microsoft Entourage 2004 and iPhone can sync information.

The article “How to enable Entourage syncing to iPhone” states that syncing requires the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.5 Update, however, sync capabilities were actually introduced in the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.2.3 Update. The latest update version is 11.3.6 and can be downloaded directly from Microsoft’s website or via the Microsoft AutoUpdate application. More information about the 11.3.6 update can be found in this earlier post: Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.6 update released.

Entourage 2004 and iPhone do not sync directly with each other but instead sync via Apple’s Sync Services, which are enabled in the .Mac System Preferences pane. A .Mac account is not required to sync Entourage with Address Book, iPhone, Palm or similar applications and devices that support Sync Services.

Yes sync works, well -- 'cept for Entourage to iCal with large calendars. That'll spike and crash you CPU every-time. Also, Entourage's imap client really gets out of whack with the iPhone. No idea as to why exactly, but it does.

I personally don't have large calendars (just not popular enough, I guess). One thing that I've found that can bog down syncs, even from Entourage to Entourage, is repeating events without an end. If you have been invited to one of those "weekly status meetings" that will apparently still be occurring up to 2048 then you might want to ask the meeting originator to reschedule for just one year at a time.

What do you mean by "Entourage's IMAP client really gets out of whack with the iPhone"? Are you possibly referring to trashing mail in an IMAP account?

The iPhone treats deleted messages like a "normal" IMAP client where Entourage actually treats them by default like POP or Exchange accounts. Items deleted by the iPhone don't move to the Deleted Items folder but instead are just marked for deletion. You'll see these appear in Entourage as messages with strike-throughs. I wish Apple made a way to purge deleted items immediately, but the best you can do is set them to be purged after 24 hours. :-(
