Office for Mac Help is often overlooked as a source for using Entourage. It's the first place to look for help and often the fastest way to find answers. Keep reading to see what's new in Help for Office 2008 applications.
In Office for Mac 2008, Help will be updated regularly based on customer feedback/data. These updates will be automatically available in the Help Viewer if you have the Help Viewer set to online mode (you can switch between online and offline mode in the bottom left of the Help Viewer window). The updated content will also be available on Mactopia.
Office Help will not cache updated content offline. A large portion of Help content is installed offline when the product is installed. Users will simply have a larger set of content and more up-to-date content if they are online.
In Leopard, there is a new Search box in the Help menu that searches Apple Help as well as Office for Mac menus. Unfortunately, it does not search Office for Mac Help. The reason that other apps from Apple are searching Help is because the Help systems are implemented using Apple Help system. Office is not using the Apple Help system. You need to actually select Entourage Help.
You can find Menu items using the search box. Note: Source and Internet Headers are two items that have been moved in Entourage 2008. Previously they were under View.
If you want to submit an item that you couldn't find in Help, use Send Feedback under Help in the menu bar. At the bottom of every Help page where they have a "Was this information helpful?" set of buttons. Please send your feedback about Help. Once you click any of the buttons you can include additional feedback about your selection (up to 850 characters).

Giesa:Hi
I updated Office2008 on my Mac (G5) today and everything seems to be good. But one thing don't work. The Sound in Entourage. When I start the programm the sound is already there but after the first e-mail arrived the sound is away. I start the prog again and same thing happened.
Any tip around for this?
Best Regards

Richard Archer:Lately I'm getting many many messages saying that an email could not be delivered. It appears that something has gotten control of my email and is sending out mass mailings of Viagra ads. I tried changing my email account password as Earthlink tech support suggested, but no help. I'm new to OS X and thought that problems like this were windows specific. Any idea on how to get rid of this phantom sender? I'm using Entourage 2008 on an Intel Mac running Leopard.

dianer:Are you sure you are sending them or is this someone hijacking your email address? Look in Sent Items folder. Do you see them there?
This is a pretty common spammer practice. In fact, I even have a rule that excludes the mail I actually send my self so it doesn't get marked as spam. the Junk Mail Filter knows enough to know spammers use your email to send spam.
This rule catches the real spam where it appears the mail is from you and not mail you send yourself. I like the first example. I haven't met a spammer yet that uses Entourage for a sending client.
Junk Mail where "From is Me"
If this is your problem all you can do is wait it out. It usually goes away after a few weeks. Otherwise you will have to retire that email.

brandon haigler:Hi everyone, running the newest macbook pro with Leapard 10.5. I recently set up Office 2008 for mac and can receive email with entourage but I cannot send. I keep receiving different error messages. I have the correct pop and smtp settings put in as well as my email address, username, and password. These settings were the same on my old pc running outlook. I've tried tweaking with the advanced settings but nothing seems to work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Diane RossHi Brandon,
First, are you running Leopard 10.5.2? Have you applied the 12.0.1 updater to Entourage 2008? What type of account? (POP, IMAP, Exchange)
Send & Receive problems can be complex to solve. See the Send & Receive Page and make sure you have tried the basics. The Accounts Page offers tips for specific accounts.
Delete all entries in your Keychain for your account. Delete your account....not just the info but the account. Enter again and be very careful when you enter the data. An added space could be causing the problem. SMTP incorrectly entered as STMP is a common mistake. :-)
To find the exact cause, you will need to monitor your network traffic to see what Entourage is saying to your ISP. Tools for Troubleshooting Send & Receive offers two solutions. Personally, I like tcpflow. Another application that I ran into recently that seems to be a bit more user friendly is EavesDrop....Let it capture some stuff then double-click any of the lines of text in the main window to see more detail.

Donald Dashney:Hello i just had Os reinstall sys update and when I open my Entourage I get the following message:
"entourage cannot access your data, to attempt to fix the problem, rebuild database"
How ever it does not allow me rebuild the data base. I then get this message:
"An error occured while attempting to rebuild your database.
(an unknown error (-5000) occured
please help

Diane RossSee this explanation on the Error Page for error -5000.
If you continue to have problems, we need to look at the way your did your reinstall of the OS. I do highly recommend that you make a backup copy of your Identity folder. As long as you have an Identity that will open you can always salvage your data.
Did you run Repair Permissions after the re-install?

Brandon Haigler:Hello Diane and thanks for the response. I am running Leapard 10.5.2. I checked and the "smtp" is entered correctly (it's a POP account by the way). However, I was not aware of a 12.0.1 updater for Entourage. How do I go about getting this? I will install this update and if it still doesn't work, I will try using tcpflow to see if I can get any additional info that may help.

Diane RossYou can download the 12.0.1 updater from Mactopia. I urge you to read the blog entry New installer for 12.0.1. Follow the directions for installing. You might be able to skip the first step in removing your installed copy of Office IF you have not modified the files mentioned in the article.
During the update process, it should also update the AutoUpdater (MAU). This is a critical update if you want to receive automatic updates for Office. See blog article Office 2008 AutoUpdate (MAU) updated to 2.1.1 for details.
Generally updates and re-installing do not fix problems like you are experiencing with Send & Receive. Regardless, you need to update. It contains a lot of bug fixes.

Tiffani:I have been running Entourage 2008 version 12.0.1 for my work email for months without a problem. About a month ago when I went to send mail I would get a error message saying that the "an operation on the server timed out. The server may be down, overloaded or there may be too much net traffic. Mail could not be sent"
I have been in touch with my work's tech support and he seems to think it is something with my ISP. I have been in touch with Comcast several times and they say it is something with Mac. I have also called Entourage Support which re-did all my settings and still did not help. I do not know what to do now. I have gone through all my account settings with all other co-workers and they have what I do and they are able to send and receive without a problem. I have Google'd the error message as well to see what others have done but have still yet to try any suggestions that work. ANY help on solving this would be helpful. I am working off of two emails servers and am getting quite frustrated as no one seems to be able to help me.

Diane RossWe are expecting any day now the SP1 release for Office 2008. This might help with your problems.
In the mean time, I can sympathize. Just today an account is giving me the same error. Nothing is even showing up in tcpflow that would give me a clue as to what is happening. My problem started when Comcast blocked port 25 for my accounts because my email address was being hijacked for spam. This resulted in my other accounts not sending through Comcast's SMTP. I had to use the relay SMTP and that worked for a bit and now it is not sending. It's really frustrating when your default account won't send. . I'm off to work on my problem and will report back if I find a solution or it magically clears up.
A workaround is to forward your emails to an account like Gmail and download from the one source.

Diane RossI ended up solving my problem by changing the Port number from 25 to 2525 and no authentication. I also had to change my SMTP from comcast.net to relay.pair.com. All of this as a result of security changes at my ISP.

Diane RossThe Setup Assistant should not be needed with an update. Try the fix in this article:
[Office 2008 SP1] install causes setup assistant to loop
Yes, you can revert. Did you follow the tip to zip our Office folder described in Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) released . If not you will need to use "Remove Office" then install SP1.
Using "Remove Office" and installing again might be your best option if the "loop" fix does not work.
BTW, you will get faster help if you ask on the Entourage newsgroup. How to subscribe to the MSFT newsgroups

J. Payne:Is there a way to export group lists from Entourage into MAC Mail?
Posted by J. Payne | May 31, 2008 1:37 PM
Posted on May 31, 2008 15:11
Diane RossAs you have found not everything is exported between Entourage and Apple Address Book. Even the Export as Entourage archive (.rge) does not do groups. Export as Entourage archive tells you to drag the group to a Note and export that. Depending on the number of groups you have this might not be practical. I would be more inclined to have the groups as a tab delimited file. This text file can be opened easily and you can use Excel to edit the info.
To export a group as a tab delimited file, use this workaround:
Export a group as a tab delimited file

J. Payne:Unfortunately, you cannot export Groups using this method. It will only export contacts in your address book (Vcards).

Diane RossWhen you export a category of contacts (note you will have to set a category for the group) then you have the group as an Address Book. This is what you will need to sync to the Address Book. You might need to do this in a new User. Read over the directions again. Once you get the 'group' out of Entourage as individual contacts and no other contacts then you can sync them to the Apple Address Book. Set as an Apple Address Book group.

you please help?

Diane Ross1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration
You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.
If you continue to have problems, i need more details. Is this POP or IMAP? Who is your ISP?
Did this just start or did you just set up the account and it's not working?

Timme Helzer:As a Comcast high speed internet user, I've used MS Entouage for Mac for several years with no problems. Then, without notice, on June 5th my "send" messages failed to be sent through Comcast. In fact, it was not possible to log on to the Comcast website through Safari or Internet Explorer.
I have been in frequent contact with MS Entourage tech support, and after exhaustive checking they have determined Comcast has changed my modem settings at the Comcast site. Comcast says they do not support Entourage, and the "send" settings are correct,
After nearly a month of not having my "send" message sent, I'm looking for another ISP that is much more reliable than Comcast. Any recommendations based on highly successful, first-hand experience?
Thanks.
Timme

Diane RossI've seen problems reported with Comcast servers for downloading Microsoft updaters, but never for mail. I suspect it's a Port problem. I have Comcast and recently had to change from Port 25 to 587 in Advanced setting for SMTP.
Comcast says they don't support helping with Entourage. Not that you can't use Entourage with them. Just say you use Outlook Express which they do support.
The fix for them blocking the Microsoft servers for download is to go to the TCP/IP in System Preferences and enter these settings:
68.87.64.196
68.87.66.196
209.188.112.3
63.81.160.11
