Microsoft has offered two deals that will enable US and Canadian users to get a free copy of Office for Mac 2008 for the cost of shipping and handling ($6.99 US/ $10.00 CDN), plus applicable taxes. The Super Suite deal ends January 14, 2007 so time is running out on this deal that will qualify you for Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition that's practically free. The Technology Guarantee program extends to March 31st, 2008.
1) Super Suite Deal: If you acquire a qualifying Microsoft® Office 2004 for Mac product between November 1, 2007 and January 14, 2008 you are eligible to receive Microsoft® Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition for the cost of shipping and handling ($6.99 US/ $10.00 CDN), plus applicable taxes.
2) Technology Guarantee program: The Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Technology Guarantee program allows customers who purchase an edition of Office 2004 for Mac to receive an edition of Office 2008 for the cost of shipping, handling and applicable tax. This offer is valid for products purchased between September 25th, 2007 and March 31st, 2008.
Note, the Super Suite Deal has different dates. If you purchased Office 2004 before the Nov. 1 date, then you could only use the technology guarantee coupon. Please read coupons carefully so you will know what is needed for proof of purchase. When mailing I suggest making a copy of your documents or send via registered mail. One user reported his coupon was "lost in the mail" leaving him with no free upgrade. He had failed to make copies so learn from his mistake. You can also select to Redeem Online
Some Office for Mac 2004 users have opted to purchase the Student and Teacher's version for 2004 just to qualify for the Suite Deal to get the Special Media Edition. Home uses can take advantage of this option. Note: In the 2008 version, it's now called Home and Student Edition.
Even some Office for Mac X users have decided to get Office 2004 just for the VBA features that are no longer available in Office 2008. They have opted to run both 2004 and 2004 Office version using different Users.
Sorry there are no promotions for Switchers that own a PC version of Office. See special prices in Pre-order Office for Mac 2008
If you are a home user, you might find that you no longer need the full Standard version and can use the Home & Student version. It does not contain Exchange support or Automator actions. Be sure to compare prices for the upgrade version to the Home & Student version. Retail; $240 for the upgrade, Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition $150.

D9:So is there no other difference in the 2 offers other than the qualifying purchase date?
Seems rather confusing to have 2 promotions almost identical, if so.

dianerBesides the date, there is a difference. The Suite Deal will get you the Special Media Edition regardless of which version you buy. The Technology Guarantee gets you the upgrade for an equal version. The Suite Deal is 'sweet'.

John Smith:I purchased Office 2004 with the purchase of a new iMac on November 23. I was verbally assured I would be able to upgrade to 2008 for a nominal media cost. Unfortunately I didn't get the rebate form from the Apple store and was not aware of the need for a bar code from the large package, which I had discarded. Despite my pleading with the folks on the rebate phone number, including offering to send the CD, manual and product keys as proof I had the product, they would not relent from the sacred bar code requirement. The local Apple store would not/could not do anything.
Very disappointing.

dianerHi John,
You took the word of your retailer. This is not Microsoft's fault. Your only recourse is to go back to the Apple store and complain.
It's a life lesson that not easy to accept. Sorry!
