Microsoft released an update to the Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) application in preparation for future updates to Office 2008. The MAU update uses a VISE installer, however the plan is for future updates to Office 2008 to be in Apple PackageMaker format for easier admin install.
It is critical that you update. MAU will not tell you about any future updates unless you first install this update to MAU itself.
To download, select "Check for Updates" under Help in the menu bar under any Office application.
Notes added March 10, 2008 for further clarification.
The MAU is located in the root Library:
/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0
Previous Office versions install MAU in the root Applications folder. If you are using both Office 2004 and Office 2008 you will need both updaters.
If you are having problems updating, download the stand alone updater. It will not update a beta version.
You can try dragging the MAU out of the folder into the trash then try running the updater.
The MAU will not show up as an installed update. It is not considered an Office application. Once it is installed properly, it will not continue to locate the file to update.
You can check MAU with Get Info.
