Previously, in Fonts increasing in size with each reply-MSFT is listening we discussed the problem where font sizes increase with each reply to an email using Entourage 2008. Thanks to the many users that responded to Hui Nee's questionnaire, the problem points to two possible causes.
- Corresponding with Eurdora users.
- Enabling the Dutch dictionary (Preferences | Spelling).
A temporary workaround for users who enabled the Dutch dictionary would be to switch to the English dictionary for now. Please note you will have to relaunch Entourage for the change to happen.
Another alternative is to use Plain Text instead of HTML. The settings for Plain Text only affect what YOU see and not what the sender receives. The receiver will see the messages with THEIR preferences. When setting Plain Text, choose what YOU like. This is a great feature, especially if you like larger fonts for easy viewing. However, the font and size you choose for HTML messages will reflect the font for outgoing HTML mail and will be subject to the receiving application on how it will display the font size. HTML font size can sometimes be misinterpreted when sent from a Mac to PC as well as between different email clients for the Mac and PC. This is why plain text is often preferred.
As a general FYI,
Entourage 2008 switched from pixels to points in font rendering/composing, which improves display consistency with Safari on the Mac.
However this also means that emails sent from Entourage 2004 (or any other application using the pixels system) would show up in smaller fonts on Entourage 2008.
For example, Arial 10 from Entourage 2004 shows up as Arial 7.5 on Entourage 2008 because it was Arial 10px displayed as Arial 7.5pt. Naturally the font size discrepancy can also be detected the other way around. You will also see this same behavior if you copy and paste to/from Entourage.
MSFT is continuing to investigate these issues.
I would like to encourage everyone who's seeing this issue and it is not related to Eudora or Dutch settings, to report this on the Entourage newsgroup. Hui Nee regularly checks the newsgroup, and will respond to your posts pretty quickly. This way, when she responds, multiple users benefit.
The following info included in your message will help.
- What version Mac OS X are you running? How to find version info
- What version Microsoft Entourage are you using? Including update if any. How to find version info
- Do you see this with every message with every email correspondent?
- Do you know what email client your correspondent uses?
- What font (name and size) do you typically use?
- Does it occur when you reply, when they reply, or both?
We need to congratulate a developer that is openly accepting help from the public in order to get this fixed.
If you want to let Microsoft know how you feel then send feedback.
When working in Office, you can use the "Send Feedback" option under the Help menu in all of the Office applications.

Clif Smith:I've noticed another font issue where fonts are oversized when sent to certain clients. I've seen this on my company's "Outlook Webaccess" and Evolution.
I think a buddy of mine might have figured it out. When I view one of my emails in Outlook WebAccess, then click "View as Web Page", then view the source of that I get:
<BASE href="https://mail.company.com/exchange/foo/Inbox/Test.EML/" />
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Test</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<FONT SIZE="5"><FONT FACE="Arial"><SPAN STYLE='font-size:10pt'>This is a test in Arial/10.</SPAN></FONT></FONT>
</BODY>
</HTML>
Note the "FONT SIZE="5". If I remove "<SPAN STYLE='font-size:10pt'>" it is EXACTLY what I see via Outlook WebAccess. If I remove "FONT SIZE="5" it is exactly what I see in Entourage. Could it be that some clients choose to use The "FONT SIZE" statement and then ignore the "SPAN STYLE" statement?
Is there any way I can not have "FONT_SIZE=5" show up?
[I had to modify this comment to make the HTML brackets appear correctly. Please note that it may not appear as originally posted. William Smith]

Karl Owens:Add me to the list of people seeing this problem. I'm not using the Dutch dictionary. Not sure what email program people I'm corresponding with use, but I doubt it is Eudora.
The following info included in your message will help.
1. What version Mac OS X are you running?
MAC OSX - 10.5.2
2. What version Microsoft Entourage are you using? Including update if any.
Entourage 2008 12.0.1
3. Do you see this with every message with every email correspondent?
Not all. Some size differences are small, some are drastically larger.
4. Do you know what email client your correspondent uses?
No. Most likely Apple Mail or Thunderbird
5. What font (name and size) do you typically use?
Just the defaults. I never change them.
6. Does it occur when you reply, when they reply, or both?
I notice it mostly when receiving a reply, but have had reports of both and even had reports of problems with freshly created messages received from me.

Ruben E. A. Musson:Switching from the Dutch dictionary to English solves the problem for me. I noticed that, when using Dutch spelling, the font size is displayed as a decimal number while typing a message. However, Dutch locale typically uses a comma as the decimal separator instead of a dot (stop). This comma also appears in the HTML-version of the message just written. As the HTML-interpreter fails to understand this notation, the SPAN-command is ignored, leaving the initial font-size of 5!
