It's Super Update Tuesday! Office for Mac 2008 receives it first update. You must have updated your AutoUpdater (MAU) to 2.1.1 in order to download or be notified. I suggest downloading the 12.0.1 Update standalone updater from Mactopia. Users seem to have better success from using the standalone updater.
Fixed:
- Sounds should now be working!!!
- Reliability is improved when connecting via IMAP to a server running IBM Lotus Domino
- Reliability is improved when synchronizing with a server running Microsoft Exchange Server
- Synchronizing data with devices and other applications improved
- Import of rules and identities is improved
- Stability is improved when using Database Utility to rebuild a large identity database
- Printing to a high resolution printer no longer prints blank pages (this was listed as a Word fix, but hopefully it works in Entourage also)
- Office Installer no longer grants restricted users unauthorized access to Office 2008 for Mac program files
- Last and one that seems to always be included..... Security is improved
Be sure to read the following carefully. Some users are reporting problems after updating. It's much easier to do it right than it is to fix the resulting mess.
Install Basics
As with any update it's important to backup. An easy way would be to archive (.zip) your Office folder. This way if your update tanks, you can revert to your archived copy.
Even though the installer is not supposed to touch your Entourage data in the Microsoft User Data folder. I suggest making a backup. On rare occasions I have seen an Identity disappear.
Before Installing: Quit any applications that are running, including virus-protection applications, all Office applications, Microsoft Messenger for Mac, and Office Reminders, because they might interfere with installation. How to quit Reminders Reminders is the new name for Notifications. An easy way to make sure there are no applications interfering with your install is to log out/in with Shift key held down to disable all startup items.
Trouble Installing Update
- The Installer does not support updating an application in a location other than a bootable partition. You will need to move the application back to a bootable partition get the updater to work. You can move it back after updating. (This is a Apple installer function.)
- The updater will only update the RTM version. You should check the MicrosoftComponentPlugin.framework and the applications should be 12.0.0 (071130) (European build numbers could be different)
- If the updater fails or says it cannot find a version of Office that needs updating, then reboot and try again.
- Apply the latest Apple Combo updater. It will overwrite files that might have become corrupt.
- Remember to restart after updating and run Repair Permissions
Troubleshoot Installing MAU:
The MAU is located in the root Library:
/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0
If you are having problems updating, download the stand alone updater. It will not update a beta version.
You can try dragging the MAU out of the folder into the trash then try running the updater.
If you are experiencing any problems after updating, we'd prefer that help questions be directed to the Entourage newsgroup so other users can benefit from the answers and contribute to a solution.
