I did a Wipe and install using Leopard and then upgraded to SL and did a re-install of Office for Mac 08. I got the most recent update 12.2.1.
Even since I did that I can not open .doc documents sent to me in Emails.
I have tried the workaround that is offered but have not been able to get it to work.
I am unhappy with MS fixing something that did not need fixing. I think the warning box that you are opening a document that may be dangerious would have been sufficient.
And I tried to gt MS Support... they wanted me to pay $45.00 for the Tech call to resolve a non-issue that they created.
I had Duncan send me some test files and they worked for me.
I suggested he check his fonts and to do a re-install of Snow Leopard. The re-install of Snow Leopard fixed his issues.
Re-install Snow Leopard
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and select to install. Make your selections under customizations. It will install over a previous Snow Leopard install like a combo updater without erasing any files.
I suggest install Rosetta. For now, there are many applications that need it. The original Office 2008 DVDs will require it to update the MAU. It's very small and doesn't slow down performance.
SL is working fine for me (although initially Firefox kept crashing) it is Office 2008 that seems to be having problems. Excel is very slow but is helped by putting it into normal rather than page view. Whether deleting duplicate fonts made any difference I do not know.
I presume that there is some incompatibility between SL and Office 2008 somewhere?

Most issues with Office 2008 and Snow Leopard have been problems in the User's folder and not an incompatibly issue.
Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it’s your User’s folder that contains the problem.
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Excel there.
